The name Vernon’s will be instantly familiar to anyone who’s ever played the football pools (it’s what people used to dream of winning before the National Lottery came along), although not so many people are aware they also operate an online casino. To confuse matters, their sibling football pools operator – the equally famous Littlewoods – also had a casino of their own, which was swallowed up by Vernon’s in July 2012.
In keeping with the feel of their pools enterprise and their overall branding, Vernon’s have decked out their casino in a populist, tabloid style that typifies the approach taken to online casinos by similar household names like Sky and Virgin: They’ve avoided any dark, seductive leather and glitzy effects and avoided making it look like a casino in any way whatsoever, opting instead for a basic red, white and blue colour scheme that will offend absolutely no-one, whilst also appealing to huge sections of the Great British public.
Navigation is very easy, although strangely you do get to choose from tabs marked ‘casino’ and ‘games’, which usually implies that the site has added a new software supplier at some point and shifted its old games to a different category – but here, the slots offered in each category seemed to be identical.
Signing up was about as easy as you’ll find on a casino these days, and more importantly you can play the games in demo mode without registering, yet alone having to deposit. This is increasingly harder to do nowadays, so full marks to Vernon’s.
The banking page lists Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Skrill and Neteller as its accepted deposit methods: We would expect a site backed by someone of Vernons’ size to offer at least a few more methods like UKash and some of the better-know prepaid cards, but on the plus side they do let you withdraw using all 5 methods as well.
The games come courtesy of as stock Playtech installation, which comes as no surprise: They’re a safe pair of hands, and converting your casino to Playtech these days seems to be almost de rigeur for UK bookmaker sites, so why not a pools operator as well? That means, however, that you’ll see the same set of games found on dozens of other sites - though in all fairness they are good: You’ll find the best branded slots here, some decent progressives if not the largest or the biggest selection (Microgaming still have that honour), and the table games are the best in the business.
You’ll also find a poker tab on the homepage and your password works for all sections of the site, so if you fancy graduating onto the big boys’ games then it’s easy to do so.
Contacting Vernon’s is as easy as it can be made: Their 24/7 freephone line number is right on the homepage, as is the 24 hour chat window – if only all sites did that…
